On Thursday 8th March 2018 some hardy Rotarians set off to visit the International Fire Training Centre at Durham Tees Valley Airport.
Some fell by the wayside in the extremely hostile and challenging weather conditions. Mrs Morgan was most apprehensive as Hugh had elected to take Sue’s new Jaguar, which had additional ballast in the shapes of John Fields and David Capes.
Eventually 14 surviving intrepid travellers congregated in the IFTC restaurant to swap tales of terror about snow drifts and crashed cars. The cups of coffee and biscuits were most welcome after some 2 hours of driving.. We were warmly greeted by our hosts Chris Brown and Jane Dunn. Then it was out to the fire ground to see 2 German fire crews tackle some aircraft fires. After a couple of hours of fire fighting we retired with the fire crews to the IFTC restaurant for an excellent lunch.
On behalf of Pickering Rotary a huge thank you to Chris Brown and Jane Dunn for an absolutely fabulous visit.
The day finished with a look at the new airport facilities. David Capes found the cockpit of a Vulcan bomber in one of the hangers and spent 5 minutes getting into it and 15 minutes trying to get back out of it. Kate Atkinson got a big strong fireman to put her into a fire engine so she could have a view from the driver’s seat.
